How Much Should You Tip on Mount Kilimanjaro?
Tipping is a common way to show appreciation for the hard work of the mountain crew who support you during your Mount Kilimanjaro trek. Your guides, assistant guides, cook, and porters work together to help make your climb organized, comfortable, and safe.
At Alpine Chat Adventure, we encourage climbers to plan for tips as part of their overall trekking budget. The amount you give is a personal decision and should reflect the service you receive, the size of your crew, and the length of your climb.
Recommended Daily Tips for Your Kilimanjaro Crew
The following amounts are general tipping suggestions in US dollars for each crew member, per day of the climb. They are intended as a guide rather than fixed or compulsory payments.
| Crew member | Suggested tip per day |
|---|---|
| Lead guide | $20–25 |
| Assistant guide | $15–20 |
| Cook | $12–15 |
| Porter | $8–10 |
| Helping or specialist porter | $8–12 |
These are suggested amounts per crew member, per day, not per climber. For a group of climbers, the total tip is normally pooled and shared among the crew. Your share will depend on the number of climbers, the number of crew members, the duration of the trek, and the total amount collected.
How Much Should You Budget for Tips?
The total amount depends on your itinerary and crew size. A longer climb may require more crew support, while additional services, such as a private portable toilet, may involve an extra specialist porter.
For example, a private seven-day climb for two people might have a crew consisting of a lead guide, an assistant guide, a cook, and eight porters. The actual crew size can vary according to the route, group size, equipment, and logistical requirements.
Before your climb, ask Alpine Chat Adventure to confirm your expected crew size and provide guidance on budgeting for tips. This will help you plan ahead and avoid surprises at the end of your trek.
When and How Should You Give the Tips?
Tips are commonly handed over at the end of the climb, after you have completed your trek and had an opportunity to thank your mountain crew.
We will provide envelopes so you can hand tips directly to your crew after returning to your hotel in Moshi.
We recommend preparing your tip budget in advance and bringing suitable cash in US dollar denominations, subject to your operator's guidance. This makes the process easier after several days on the mountain.
Why Are Tips Important?
Mountain crews work hard throughout your climb. Guides manage the trek and monitor the group's wellbeing, cooks prepare meals, and porters carry essential supplies and camping equipment along the mountain trails.
A tip is one way to recognize their contribution, but it should not replace fair wages, suitable working conditions, or responsible treatment of the crew. Clear information about wages, crew welfare, and tip distribution helps climbers understand how their support reaches the people working on the mountain.
Our Commitment to Responsible Crew Treatment
At Alpine Chat Adventure, we believe that mountain crew members deserve respectful treatment, clear payment arrangements, and appropriate working conditions. We encourage our climbers to ask questions about crew welfare and how tips are distributed.
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Climb with Confidence
Understanding tipping before you arrive helps you prepare a realistic budget and appreciate the people supporting your adventure. Once your route and trek duration are confirmed, Alpine Chat Adventure can help you understand the expected crew arrangements and how to plan for tips.
